Golder Associates, in cooperation with Grontmij, has been awarded the design work for the Kungens Kurva traffic junction as part of “Förbifart Stockholm” - the new highway bypass of Stockholm.

The contracts for the design of the complete highway bypass is estimated to just over EUR 30 million of which the Kungens kurva design contract is close to EUR 10 million.  Golder's involvement in the project, which relates to geotechnical engineering, tunnel design, hydrogeological and environmental aspects on the project, will commence after the summer and is expected to extend over a two-year period. Grontmij will undertake traffic planning, landscape architecture, electricity and lighting, project management, construction and design.

Jan Hermanson, managing director of Golder in Sweden said, “I am delighted that we have been awarded this high profile project and to be working alongside Grontmij.  This project is a clear indication that Golder remains a leader in the geotechnical engineering field and continues to be an attractive provider of expert services to infrastructure projects.”

Förbifart Stockholm – the Stockholm bypass – is a new motorway linking southern and northern Stockholm resulting in a new route for the European highway (E4) past Stockholm.  To reduce the impact on sensitive natural and cultural environments, just over 17 km of the total of 21 km of the motorway link will be in tunnels.

The construction work is planned to start in 2012 and it will take at least 8 years to finish.  When the link opens for traffic it will be one of the longest road tunnels in the world. By 2035, the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) estimates that Förbifart Stockholm will be used by approximately 140,000 vehicles per day.
