Golder joins the Climate Bond Initiative

Apr 3, 2017

In early 2017, The Climate Bonds Initiative (CBI) announced the formation of a new Technical Working Group (TWG). The Waste Management TWG will develop a set of science-based criteria that can be used to screen potential waste management assets and projects. The aim is to identify those waste projects which are best practice in addressing carbon and climate risks.

As specialists in waste management, Golder Associates is proud to join the Waste Management TWG and will contribute with our in-depth knowledge and experience. Golder also brings WRATE - a life cycle assessment software tool which is used to assess environmental impacts of waste management activities. The software includes extensive abilities to model waste management systems from kerbside collection to advanced treatment facilities.

On the 24th April 2017, Golder will be releasing a new version of the WRATE software.  WRATE Version 4 (V4) will replace both the previous Standard and Expert versions of the software as a single version. WRATE V4 will combine some of the advantages of the Expert version with the cost benefits of the Standard version. All users of WRATE V4 will now be able to edit existing processes and create new processes. Six default impact assessments are included in WRATE V4: Global Warming Potential; Depletion of Abiotic Resources; Human Toxitity; Freshwater Aquatic Ecotoxitiy; Acidification and Eutrophication.

The criteria being developed by the TWG is intended to facilitate capital flows to innovative, effective waste technologies and infrastructure that accelerates the transition to a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy. The Waste Management TWG group convenes 19 expert representatives from 16 organisations including universities, non-governmental organizations, consultancies, and industry associations, with widespread and direct expertise on global waste management.

The work of Golder and the Waste Management TWG will be essential in enabling governments, businesses, and investors to transparently assess the green credentials of projects and potential assets within the waste sector around the world.
